John 8.58

JOHN 8:58

Jesus said to them: “Most truly I say to YOU, Before Abraham came into existence, I have been.”  NWT

Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am. KJV

εἶπεν αὐτοῖς Ἰησοῦς, Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, πρὶν Ἀβραὰμ γενέσθαι ἐγὼ εἰμί

EXODUS 3:14

At this God said to Moses: “I SHALL PROVE TO BE WHAT I SHALL PROVE TO BE.” And he added: “This is what you are to say to the sons of Israel, ‘I SHALL PROVE TO BE has sent me to YOU.’” NWT

And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you. KJV

14 וַיֹּאמֶר אֱלֹהִים אֶל־מֹשֶׁה אֶהְיֶה אֲשֶׁר אֶהְיֶה וַיֹּאמֶר כֹּה תֹאמַר לִבְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל אֶהְיֶה שְׁלָחַנִי אֲלֵיכֶם׃

The Argument:

  1. In the Greek "New testament" Jesus Words were rendered ἐγὼ εἰμί (ego eimi) I am.  This is an accurate literal translation.
  2. Jehovah's words in Exodus אֶהְיֶה are also rendered  ἐγὼ εἰμί in the 300 BCE  Greek translation of the Hebrew scriptures.
  3. Therefore Jesus = Jehovah.

The Answer

  1. Jesus would not have spoken Greek to the Jews that were quizzing him in the Temple at John 8.
  2. Jehovah did not speak Greek to Moses in Exodus 3.  The correct translation should be I will be, or I shall prove to be.
  3. The style ἐγὼ εἰμί (ego eimi) is translated "I have been" in other places in John. Also rendered similarly in modern languages today. Further discussion.
